Economical production of prismatic cell housings

Manufacturing solutions for the economical production of prismatic cell housings

Do you want to manufacture metal cell housings for prismatic battery cells?
In large quantities?
In perfect quality?
At low cost?

Benefit from our innovative production solutions for the efficient laser welding of cell cups in large quantities!
The use of lasers for welding is characterised by high process speed, reliability and low costs per cell cup.

Our new system technology:
From blank to tube shell to housing in an instant

Longer prismatic cell housings are usually produced either with continuous roll-forming or cycled pressforming processes. Weil Technology now offers a new alternative and fast process with a compact system allowing for stainless steel housings with wall thickness of as low as 0.15 mm.

The innovative system can produce a cell housing made of stainless steel directly from a coil or blank. We draw on our decades of expertise in short tube production. After the optional blank trimming, a tube is rounded in the first part of the system and reliably laser-welded. In the next step, the tube is expanded into its final shape and calibrated. This allows stainless steel cell housings with material thicknesses as low as 0.15 mm to be produced economically and at high outputs in a compact space.

The characteristics of the compact fast system result in compelling business benefits:

• Coil in – cell housing out
• Down to 0.15 mm material thickness
• Cell housing with final length – no additional cutting
• Weld seam position anywhere in final housing
• Short change-over times for different cell geometries
• Very compact system footprint
• Overall cycle time < 2 sec
• Ramp-up possible

Short Profile:
Processes: cutting, forming, laser welding, expanding
Cycle Time: < 2 sec (1 sec target)
Uutput: 1620 parts/hour (90 % tech. availability)
Cell housing: L: 50 - 500 mm
W: 25 - 70 mm, H: 100 - 150 mm
Material: 0.15 – 0.6 mm stainless steel or other on request
Footprint: 8 x 9 m expected

Alternative system technology:
Laser welding cell for press-moulded parts

The Laser Welding Cell for the production of cell cans from press-formed blanks is primarily used for aluminum with wall thicknesses of 0.4 mm to 0.8 mm. It enables parallel loading and unloading as well as minimal weld seam pull-in thanks to its innovative scanner welding technology with a vision system.

Optionally, the system can be equipped with a laser cleaning system for pre-cleaning the joining edges before the welding process, thus ensuring maximum weld seam quality with aluminum.

Conclusion

The two systems presented are both characterised by the fact that the systems can be converted to other formats with minimal time and cost expenditure. This provides a certain degree of flexibility for high production volumes.

Our services

In our TechCenter, we offer validation and prototype production for series production, which means that we weld and cut using the same technology as our series modules: where possible, the tools manufactured and used for this are always the same.

We do:
> feasibility & validation
> prototypes & preseries
> system design & planing
> plant production & commissioning
